Cloud platform operators that run their operations at massive scale benefit from deploying the most efficient technology. That is not only to support levels of density and scalability that otherwise would not be practical, but also to provide competitively priced options for customers, with new levels of performance, efficiency and security. These are some of the motivations behind custom, cloud-native silicon developments that have come out of the hyperscalers in recent years. Since the hyperscalers control their own software stacks, most public cloud customers do not need to know the details of the underlying hardware architecture; they just choose the cloud instance with the most suitable characteristics for their workload.
