Generative and agentic AI adoption for software development is widespread, but concerns remain

By Carl Lehmann

Businesses are broadly adopting generative and agentic AI tools for use in software development tasks, including security testing, documentation, code generation and completion. They are accessing these technologies primarily by licensing commercial pretrained models such as OpenAI's GPT foundation models. Organizations adopting AI tools aim to achieve enhanced efficiency and increased productivity through end-to-end automation and the use of recommendation and prediction engines. However, these organizations also express concerns about data privacy, measuring and demonstrating effectiveness, and the potential loss of human creativity and interaction. These issues and others are represented in the results of 451 Research's DevOps, Generative AI in Software Development 2025 study.
